My SDR Hardware

For my own projects I'm using a Nooelec NESDR SMArt v5, a compact USB Software Defined Radio receiver covering HF, VHF and UHF frequencies. Its wide tuning range, stable oscillator and excellent software compatibility make it an ideal platform for learning, experimentation and protocol analysis.

The receiver works with a wide range of open-source and commercial SDR applications, allowing it to be used for everything from general spectrum monitoring through to decoding specialised digital protocols.

My Interest in SDR

Much of my work involves software development, embedded devices and understanding how systems communicate. Software Defined Radio fits naturally into that space.

It provides a practical way to investigate wireless technologies, reverse engineer simple radio protocols, monitor RF activity during development and better understand the devices that increasingly surround us. From home automation sensors and remote controls to weather stations and aircraft tracking.
